Firefly/Serenity Ebay Auctions!

So, the first annual Can't Stop the Serenity screening in Syracuse had a grand total of 2 attendees, who, while generous, were not enough to cover our costs, let alone have anything to donate to Equality Now (the charity we were fundraising for). We also had most of our raffle prizes left over, so we are auctioning them on Ebay.

Please take a look and bid if you can - we'd like to make enough to cover the rest of our costs and donate something as well. Please also pass this on to any Browncoats you know, or anyone who would be interested in supporting a charity for women's rights. Thank you!

Okay, now that I've left you all wondering for a while (because I completely forgot about making this post)...

On the weekend in the previous post, a friend of mine was house-sitting for our pastor's family while they were at a funeral, which included taking care of their cat and dog. The dog had not been doing well - had diabetes, wasn't eating so couldn't take insulin, really missing the family, etc. I went there with the friend for lunch and we found that the dog had passed away while we were at church. She called the pastor and told them, and offered to take it to their vet on Monday (since it would be 3x as expensive on a weekend). So until then, I helped her bag it up and carry it to her car (it was an Akita - pretty big dog) so it would stay cold in the snowstorm we were having. Then we had lunch and I stayed there with her for the rest of the day, watching movies.

So that's the story - maybe not what you were imagining, but yes, I helped my friend move a body. :(

I Know, I Fail at Updating

Yes, I haven't posted in almost a year, even though I read my friends page every day. There's a reason I never kept a diary when I was a kid, as I warned my brother when he made me start this. Anyway, I just sent out my Christmas Cards with a letter about the past year, which I figured I would post here to catch up other people I know. I think I was able to include the pictures. Anyway, here it is:

Happy Valentine's Day!Collapse )

TL;DR: I got 2 new jobs, moved 4 times, went to my best friend's wedding, built a bunch of cool shows and needed a lot of courage.

I got a summer job!

This would not be as exciting if I were just going back to the same place as last year, but unfortunately I can't afford to work there anymore (going into debt to work at a place you love = maxed out credit cards = unhappy banks = bad financial planning). So I applied to other places, got phone interviews at 3, offered an assistant job and was waiting to hear on the TD one, and they emailed me today with an offer! So I will be the Technical Director for the Dorset Theatre Festival in VT. The ATD job would have been fun, and with people I know, but paid a lot less and started earlier, before I finished the season here. At Dorset I can finish the season at the Public and have a week before I start there, and a week at the end of August. And it pays almost as much as I'm making now, which is very good, bill-paying-wise.

Now whether I will be subletting my apartment or moving out depends on where I go in the fall. I have some applications out already (and have had one interview at the one I really want), but now that I know my summer schedule I can send out more. And bite my nails until I hear from them. But at least I will be employed for the summer, and if I don't get anything else they would love for me to stay at the Public. So I guess I really shouldn't be worrying about this as much as I have been. I really should update my portfolio though - I'm sure someone will want to see it at some point. Yet another thing for the to-do list.

YAY!

I went ice skating today at lunch! Thus finally using the skates I got at a yardsale two years ago and justifying their exorbitant expense of $5.

Also, it's been a while (as in, well, more than 10 years) so I was very proud to achieve my main goal: to NOT FALL DOWN. And there were only a couple of near misses. I was only there for about 45 minutes of the open time, but that was plenty as my body reminded me vigorously that I had not done this in a long time. Lots of leg and feet muscles being used in unusual combinations, though that got better after I tightened the laces. That is one thing I do remember, that I could never really get the skates tied as tight as they needed to be - I think I usually had a grownup tie them for me. What I did not expect was how much my lower back hurt, apparently from the stress of keeping my center of gravity just ahead of my ankles with my variations of speed. I was alright once I got going, but as could be expected the trouble was when I was starting and stopping. But after a while I was able to move away from the edge a bit and at least double my speed, so by the end a lap around the rink only took 2 minutes instead of 5.

So it was good to do again, though much more like work than fun, and I did not embarrass myself, but I am sore tonight and will need a bit of practice before it really gets fun again.

And then I spent three hours sewing curtains that will need at least that much more work before they are done. These big projects would be much easier if I had a pattern and didn't have to just make it up as I go.

Happy Stupid Day!

Tagged by fweever

A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same.
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."

1. I think of many things during the week that I could post about here, usually going as far as composing entries in my head, but they almost never last until I am actually on the computer. Hence my horrible updating schedule.

2. I listen to a cd of lullabies every night as I go to sleep - not so much because I have to to be able to fall asleep, but because if I'm listening to that there's a better chance of my brain SHUTTING UP and letting me sleep.

3. I absolutely suck at going to bed at a decent time, no matter how little/much I have to do.

4. Whenever people recommend a book I've never heard of to me, I generally say I'll add it to my list of books to read, although it's already pretty long. The trick to this is that the list is almost entirely in my head, so when I'm looking for a new book, only the ones I'm most interested in come to mind. This doesn't mean I've completely forgotten the others, because I'll recognize them if I see them, they just won't make it to the top of the list for a while. My apologies if this offends anyone who's recommended a book to me before.

5. I've been keeping track of all the books I read since August 1999. (I'm up to 1598, if you're interested.) I averaged 200/yr until I started working, then it dropped to 100/yr, even though I theoretically had more time. I think it's because in school I had so much to do that I was more desperate for the escape, and therefore more attentive to using small moments to keep reading (on the bus, meals, 2 min before class started, etc). Whereas now I have larger blocks of time, but often choose to do other things, like movies or the internet. I also don't usually record the fanfic I read, even though many of those are novel length.

6. I find it hard to come up with things about me for these memes and quizzes that anybody could actually find interesting, without also being incredibly embarrassing.

7. I have already planned out in my head what I would do if I won the lottery or was given a fortune: 1)Give 10% to charity and put 10% in savings 2) Pay off my credit cards, student loans, car loans, etc. 3)Buy a new car 4)Pay off my brother's student loans 5)Pay off my parents' mortgage 6)Build a library and buy the books I've always wanted but couldn't afford to get 7)Travel the world and see all the places I've only read about.

Of course, this plan is somewhat moot, as I don't play the lottery and have no rich relatives to leave me fortunes. More's the pity.
